In Unit 9 (Autonomous 1), students understand the use of the imperfect past (pretérito imperfecto). They practice the use of simple and imperfect past including using connectors to join events. They also learn about the verb soler and to use it in present and imperfect past tenses. They understand the use of the orthographic accent. They practice adverbial expressions of frequency such as a menudo, cada día, etc. They use the short form of adjectives, like buen y algún, and the forms of haber: hay, hubo y había. They review more expressions with tener and hacer. They learn more affective and reflexive verbs and contrast the use of these type of verbs. They discover how to determine the gender of nouns. They practice speaking impersonally and the use of the neutral article lo.
In Unit 10 (Autonomous 2), students realize how some verbs have different meaning in present and in preterit and how the meaning of the adjectives change when they are attached to the verb ser or the verb estar. They practice the use of prepositions and a variety of prepositional phrases. They review the regular and irregular commands for tú and usted. They practice the use of the two prepositions por and para. They explore and practice the use of adverbs and adverbial phrases.
